Returning to work after a career break - The first few weeks

Returning to work after a period of time out can feel very daunting and unsettling.  The organisation may feel different since you left:  there may be new people, a new structure, some people may have left, your office may have moved or changed its approach to home /office /hybrid working.

Are there practical elements to returning to work such as a different commute? Do you have something you feel confident in to wear? Do you know where you are going to sit / do you need to book a hot desk?

That is before we get to how you actually feel about going back: scared, nervous, excited?

Whatever the challenges are there are some key ways to navigate those first few weeks to make yourself feel more in control.

The good news is: Being in control is within your control!

You can decide how those first few days will look and feel to you.

Having a connection within your workplace can be extremely valuable. Someone who is there on your first day as you re-establish yourself can be a game changer in managing how you feel.  If your organisation does not offer this, it is worth asking if there is a buddy system where you can be paired up with someone and / or ask for a mentor.  These relationships and connections will help you navigate those first few weeks and beyond.

It is really normal to feel nervous and apprehensive.  All of this shows that you really care.

Your life may have looked quite different during your time away so part of the process will be re-establishing your routine.  Once that foundation is made and your routine feels part of your normal, then the rest will follow.

During the first few weeks as you orientate yourself back into work mode, ask your manager or boss for a 121 for some feedback.  These conversations can be really valuable in not only giving you a confidence boost but also getting some key areas you can work towards.  Use this as an opportunity to tell them how you feel things are going.  Sometimes small adjustments on both sides can be really key in maintaining an enjoyable working life.

5 key things to think about on your return to work:

1) What do your first few days look like for you? Do you have your commute and any responsibilities outside of yourself mapped out and sorted? Is your hot desk booked?

2) Does your organisation offer a buddy or mentor system? If not, can you ask for one?

3) Have a think about your own values and whether anything has changed for you. If so, how can this be applied to your role going forward?

4) Ask for feedback from your boss as soon as you feel ready.  If you’re used to having feedback only at appraisal time, it is a good idea to have a check in within those first few weeks after your return.  Use this as an opportunity to give your views on how things are going for you.  Apply any feedback you receive and use this to keep an open dialogue with your manager.

5) Be prepared to feel a different level of tiredness after the initial days / weeks back.  This is also normal so try and book downtime / something you enjoy doing to celebrate completing the first few weeks!
